Spring is almost here, which means it’s the perfect time to give your home’s plumbing system some TLC! After a long winter, pipes and fixtures have dealt with temperature changes, heavy use, and the repeated freeze-thaw cycles. Taking these proactive steps for your plumbing in the spring can help you avoid costly repairs later on.

## 1. Check for Leaks Everywhere

Start indoors by inspecting [faucets](https://www.thatplumber.com/services/plumbing-and-drain/faucet/), [toilets](https://www.thatplumber.com/services/plumbing-and-drain/toilet-repair-and-installation/), and exposed pipes for drips or moisture. Even [slow leaks](https://www.thatplumber.com/services/plumbing-and-drain/leak-detection) waste water and can lead to mold or wood damage over time.

## 2. Inspect Outdoor Faucets and Hose Bibs

Once temperatures stay above freezing, check [exterior faucets](https://www.thatplumber.com/services/plumbing-and-drain/outside-hose-faucet/) by attaching garden hoses to test them. If water sprays or drips, a worn washer or loose fitting may need a quick fix. Don't forget to also check the supply on the inside to make sure the winter weather didn’t cause an interior frozen pipe that popped.

## 3. Test Your Sump Pump

Spring showers can bring heavy water flow and affect your [sump pump system](https://www.thatplumber.com/services/plumbing-and-drain/sump-pump-repair-and-installation/). Pour a bucket of water into your sump pit and if the pump doesn’t activate, it might be time for service or replacement.

## 4. Clear All Your Drains

[Kitchen and bathroom drains](https://www.thatplumber.com/services/canton-drain-cleaning/) often clog after the long winter buildup. Instead of chemical drain cleaners, which can damage pipes, consider professional drain cleaning if blockages occur.

## 5. Clean Gutters and Downspouts

Clogged gutters can create pools of water around your foundation and head into crawl spaces, stressing plumbing and basement walls. [Clean out your downspouts and gutters](https://www.thatplumber.com/services/handyman-services/gutter-and-downspout-cleaning/) now to reduce that future risk.
