With summer in full swing, you’re going to rely on your water system more than ever. From pool parties and lawn care to keeping drinks nice and cold, it’s important to ensure your home’s summer plumbing can keep up with the demand.

Summer Plumbing Tips

So, how can you prevent summer plumbing problems? Check out these tips to prevent water damage, maintain a low water bill, and more!

1. Protect Your Pipes from the Heat

When it comes to protecting your pipes, there are a variety of ways to protect both outdoor and unconditioned indoor pipes:

  • Add foam pipe insulation to help prevent overheating or bursting.
  • Shield outdoor pipes with shade or by using pipe sleeves.
  • Look into painting PVC pipes to reflect UV rays.

2. Check for Leaks and Water Damage on a Regular Basis

These types of summer plumbing checks may include:

  • Inspecting toilets, under sinks, sprinkler systems, and any other plumbing-related fixtures.
  • Being aware of your water pressure and possibly installing a pressure-reducing valve to alleviate the strain on your pipes.
  • Knowing where your main shut-off valve is located and understanding how it works in case a plumbing emergency arises.
  • Flushing your water heater to not only remove sediment buildup but also improve efficiency.

3. Maintain Your Drainage Systems

For indoor drains, avoid putting oil, grease, and food scraps down your kitchen drains. When it comes to outdoor drains, try to get rid of any twigs, leaves, and other debris to avoid any clogs and backups.

If needed, schedule a sewer line inspection to help diagnose any backups or odors.

4. Additional Summer Plumbing Tips

How else can you prevent summer plumbing problems?

  • If you have a lawn irrigation or sprinkler system, make sure it’s also inspected and adjusted for proper distribution and leak avoidance.
  • Check your garden hoses for any possible leaks and replace them to prevent water waste.
  • If you live in an area that experiences heavy rainfall, consider adding a backwater valve to help prevent sewage backups.
