Earlier this spring, we wrapped up a two-site waterline repair project for a client with properties in both Canton and North Canton, Ohio, that included winter excavation and waterline replacement to ensure there were no more leaks and code inspections to make sure we followed code requirements. Once the waterline leaks were located, the repairs were completed within just a day.
This job involved two separate locations, each with their own plumbing issues.
A leak had caused water to run into the street and freeze, which created a dangerous driving hazard. Despite the frigid 12-degree weather, That Plumber acted quickly to prevent any further risk to drivers.
At an apartment complex, management noticed unusually high water bills and soft, soggy ground around the property. These are classic signs of a main waterline leak.
While waterline repair is a standard service we provide, these two projects came with unique challenges - specifically the cold weather.
To complete both of these repairs, we first located the source of each leak. After we determined the location of each leak, we carefully dug through the frozen ground using an excavator, followed by replacing each damaged line with a durable plastic pipe and secure couplings. In order to protect the new pipes and remain within code standards, we also lined the trench with sand.
Each dig requires three-person coordination - the excavator operator, a topside crew member, and someone in the trench. Safety is always a top priority, especially when dealing with heavy equipment and deep trenches. Proper shoring or sloping of the dirt walls is critical to prevent cave-ins and protect our crew.
Regarding local regulations, we also pulled any necessary permits, scheduled inspections, and properly mounded the worksite after backfilling it to account for the ground settling in the future.
